Why do we give gifts at Christmas?

I love receiving presents during Christmas. But giving presents? It has always been one of the biggest headaches – doesn’t help as Christmas is the peak season for us. I have reached the point that I try to convince my niece & nephew that they should wait till post Christmas, then;

a) I don’t need to rush with the crowd
b) Their gifts will be bigger, as I can buy more with the same budget.

Anyway, I have always wondered why the significance of gift giving at Christmas? Is this concept created by departmental stores so that the staff and shareholders can have a fat yearend bonus?

On searching & talking to various sources, I have concluded the following:

In the Christian religion, the practice of giving gifts at Christmas is traced back to the gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh that were given to the Christ child by the three Wise Men. They were kings from the East, who traveled a great distance following a star, to find the Christ child and to bring him gifts.

Today, we all give gifts at Christmas for our own reasons. For some, it is a way to celebrate the Christian holy day. For others, it is a special time to let family and friends know that you care by giving gifts. At times, giving gifts at Christmas becomes almost mechanical, and a chore; when this happens, it is worth stepping aside for a few moments to consider why exactly you give gifts at Christmas.

Some more popular gift ideas we have for various budgets are:

1) Below $50

2) Below $100

3) Above $100

So million dollar question now is when do I get the present for my niece and nephew?
