Singapore Heritage - Peranakan

Singapore Heritage - Peranakan
The Peranakan culture is a cultural blend of Chinese, Malay and some European descent that evolved more than two hundred years ago in Malay Peninsula and Indonesia when Chinese traders settled in the region and adopted local customs.

As the Peranakans (also known as Straits Chinese) became wealthy as intermediaries between the local Chinese and the British, many adopted a practice of incorporating expensive decorative ceramic tiles into the interior and exterior of their houses as symbolism of wealth and prosperity. The usually floral motifs tiles, would add pastels and vibrant colors into their Victorian architecture reflect their very own unique blend of taste and culture. the East-West blend of the Straits Chinese.

Qua has incorporated the unique East-West blend of Peranakan tile motifs with the luster of lacquer. The Peranakan collection is the first in the world that blended the Straits Chinese unique designs into a single uniquely crafted piece.

Singapore Premiums - Pathlight Artist

Singapore Premiums - Pathlight Artist
Qua is privileged to partner with Pathlight School to introduce the Pathlight Artist Showcase – a collection of lacquerware featuring the designs from Pathlight students.

Pathlight School is the first autism-focused school in Singapore that offers a unique blend of mainstream academics and life readiness skills and this collection’s unique design captures these special people who are quaint, insightful and fun.

About the artists:

Leong Tung Seng:
At the age of 9, Tung Seng began his artistic pursuit by attending art classes at My Favourite Art House, taking up canvas painting with Acrylic paint. He paints with intricate and colourful backgrounds, with his favourite topics – buildings and public transportation.

Glenn Phua:
Glenn loves doodling and his talent in high-stamina line-art was first discovered when he is 14 years old. His keen attention to detail alludes to that of Mr Stephen Wiltshire, the renowned British artist with autism.

Selena Seow:
Selena enjoys illustrating whimsical subjects like birds and botanicals. She has a way of portraying birds in curious moments of stillness. Her birds exude a sense of calm and peace, even though they can be unpredictable and jumpy creatures. She achieves her feathery details with very well-sharpened coloured pencils.
