Orchids are extremely popular as house plants, garden plants and corsage plants and can today be found all over the world. The orchid family is the largest family of flowering plants and there are over 20,000 accepted species of orchid. Since orchids are so tremendously popular in the floral trade, horticulturists have also created over 100,000 orchid hybrids and cultivars. Many hybrids are derived from the tropics Asia and the orient as far down as Australia. They also require warm growing conditions with plenty of bright light.
In April 1981, Vanda Miss Joaquim one of the orchid’s hybrids was selected as the Singapore’s National Flower. Orchid had since been widely use as a national symbol or simply the art of appreciation during special events.
